I knew specifics of film. I was aware of specificity, you know? I knew where the lights were or should be; I knew how to move around a set like I'd built it. I knew the lay of the land. But I had never been asked to look into the specifics of character--mine and Martha's--until I worked with Mike [Nichols]. Mike wanted me to let everyone else worry about the camera and the lights and the clothes and the props, and he wanted me to get deep into Martha, and very specifically. He spoke to me with an intimacy I never knew with a shrink and with very few friends. He freed me to act, to be, to fly.
