Sidney Lumet on Brando and the Exhaust of Genius

It is no exaggeration to state that a great deal of male anger in the 1950s stemmed from the emergence of Marlon Brando. How many men could compete with Brando? In or out of the acting profession? Many tried. The world was suddenly full of Brando imitators, and the original just got sick of it all and went away. That, to me, is a tragedy and a farce. But genius will do that to people: Those who possess it and those who must live on the exhaust of it. Drive them away or insane or both.
